Mondtag’s practice goes beyond the conventional boundaries of stage design. Space is never simply a container for action; it becomes a psychological and dramaturgical force. Architecture, light, sound, costume and the body operate together, creating environments where image and narrative are inseparable. In 2024, Mondtag co-designed the German Pavilion at the 60th Venice Art Biennale with multimedia artist Yael Bartana. His work moves between theatre stages, opera houses and exhibition spaces, developing a language that sits between performance and installation. Throughout this conversation, we explore how Mondtag’s works begin, how his mind moves between image, structure and atmosphere, and how architecture can become performative. Memory is also central to this episode. In Mondtag’s practice, memory does not appear as linear biography, but through fragments that re-emerge in space, gesture, material and atmosphere. Rather than explaining the past, his work stages the ways in which memory continues to structure the present.
